With his brute strength, lethal array of firepower, and
metaphysical powers derived from Unicron
himself,
it would seem Energon Megatron could wipe out the Autobots single-handedly.
Yet somehow, he often ends up calling for a retreat. Guess he can't shake
the legacy of that idiot namesake from G1.
Tank
Drone: Megatron's tank drone is essentially a downsized version
of his tank mode from Armada, except for the main gun, which retains the
same circumference and nearly the same length as well(!). It rolls along
on four small wheels and requires two AAA batteries. Interesting features
include a flip-up targeting screen near the front right hand side, and
a Decepticon symbol on the front of the turret. The tank drone also has
a number of jagged slashes on its flanks and turret, exposing the machinery
underneath. On top of the turret are a PX peg and a peghole, perfect for
attaching Energon weapons to.
From the tip of the barrel to the rear, the tank drone measures about 16 cm (6.4") long. It's coloured metalflake black with metallic green for three of its battle slashes as well as the panelling on its left hand side, translucent green for the targeting screen and the Decepticon symbol, a pink stripe at its rear, and a dark blue firing trigger. Firing the single blue missile activates a flashing red LED beneath the translucent Decepticon symbol and a somewhat irritating rapid firing sound. The missile's range, sadly, isn't all that impressive.
Gunship
Mode: Now this is one impressive sucker. Megatron's latest
incarnation is that of an ENORMOUS futuristic gunship. 23 cm (9")
long with a 32 cm (12.5") wingspan, and reminiscent of G1
Cyclonus, Thunderwing,
and Skystalker's
space shuttle, this dreadnought features bent wings, huge twin jet engines,
a long, streamlined cockpit, and flip out landing gear with free spinning
wheels. Its armament is as follows: triple machine guns on either side
of the cockpit, large, G1
Galvatron-style pulse cannons housed in the shoulders, twin missileheads
and twin laser guns mounted in the wings, and a heavy duty plasma cannon
at the end of each wing. The tank drone attaches securely to the gunship
via the four PX pegs on the latter's back. As well, there's a PX peg on
each wing for attaching Energon weapons or Mini-Cons. Between the bent
wings and the profile of his cockpit, Megatron looks uncommonly like some
evil bird of prey.
Megatron's got a unique, yet appropriately sinister colour scheme to him in this mode. He's mainly silvery-white and dark blue with translucent green for his cockpit and weapons, assorted black and dark gray parts, light orange and metallic silver accents, airbrushed dark gray intake vents, and some bright blue on his nosecone. His spark crystal is housed near the base of the pulse cannon on his left side. And, of course, he's got huge purple moulded Decepticon symbols on his wing flaps.
Megatron's
hyper power mode consists of raising the aforementioned wing flaps. This
causes the wings to extend slightly and additional laser guns and jet
thrusters to swing out from the sides. We also see now that Megatron has
three small guns built into each of his wings. Along with the attached
tank drone, this gives him a grand total of 22 guns, more than any other
Megatron toy!
Transformation: For such a huge toy, Megatron's transformation is actually quite similar to that of a G1 Powermaster Nebulan. Swing out the legs and slide out the arms, rotate the wing section 180 degrees, fold down the cockpit section, then finally fold down the head.
Robot
Mode: Standing 24 cm (9.5") tall at the head, 30.5 cm
(12") including the shoulder cannons, E-Megatron rivals his G2 counterpart
for the title of Biggest Megatron Toy. But it's not so much his size that
makes him intimidating as it is his striking resemblance to that insanely
powerful, powerfully insane G1 Decepticon leader, Galvatron.
He's got a tall crest and twin horns on his head, his chest features four
square plates on his chest, he's got moulding on his waist that resembles
Galvatron's
sound/LED button, and his knee pads are also quite similar. And if that
wasn't enough fanwanking, the upcoming recolor of this toy is going be
named and coloured after G1 Galv.
In this mode, Megatron is mainly silvery-white with black upper arms, thighs, and feet, bright blue shoulders, chest plates, fists, and knee pads, dark and light orange accents, and a purple moulded Decepticon symbol on his chest. His head is silvery-white with dark blue crest and horns, a metallic aqua face, and penetrating orange eyes. His fistholes accommodate most Energon weapons, although they look rather puny when he holds them. He boasts articulation at the head, shoulders, upper arms (ratchet joints), elbows (hinge & swivel), hips (ratchet joints), and knees (still more ratchet joints). Thanks to all the ratchet joints in his legs, he can attain some fairly dynamic poses. His tank drone attaches to either forearm as a gun. As well, his pulse cannons can pivot down to fire at oncoming Autobots.
Megatron's
elaborately sculpted sword is made of clear plastic, has a Decepticon
symbol near the base, and stores inside the gunship's neck. Lacking a
hilt entirely, it can be withdrawn by plugging the rear of the tank drone
into the gunship neck until the sword clicks into it, then pressing down
on the blue button to extract both. Now it's simply a matter of attaching
the sword/tank onto Megs' forearm the other way around in order for him
to slice and dice his way through Autobot ranks. Pressing on the blade
activates a flashing red LED and a whooshing sound meant to represent
a sword slicing through air, or perhaps through Optimus Prime's superstructure,
thus destroying him once and for all!Yeah, like THAT'LL ever happen.
Overall, Susp Sez: This is my favourite Megatron toy to date. Huge size, impressive gunship mode, simple yet very effective transformation, even more impressive robot mode, awesome weaponry, and satisfactory if somewhat grating sound effects.
